Oliver Goldsmith (November 10, 1730(?) – April 4, 1774) was an Irish writer and physician known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), his pastoral poem A Deserted Village (1770) (written in memory of his brother), & his plays ''The Good-natur'd Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer'' (1773).

He was a boy of an Anglican cleric and grew higher within Athlone in Ireland. He earned his Bachelor of Arts inside 1749 at Trinity College, Dublin, studying theology and law but never getting when far when ordination. He late exposed medicine at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Leiden, then toured Europe, dwelling in his wits. inside his go to, he settled in London, where he worked as an apothecary's assistant. Perennially inside debt, Goldsmith got the massive output as a hack writer for a publishers of London, but his couple conscientious works earned him the company of Samuel Johnson, along with whom he was the innovation member of "The Club". A combination of his literary act & his profligate life-style led Horace Walpole to giving him a tremendously quoted epithet of Inspired Idiot.

He was buried within Temple Church. There is a monument to him around Westminster Abbey with an epitaph written by Samuel Johnson.

Goldsmith's birth date is non known sure. According to the Library of Congress authority file, he told the biographer that he was born in November 29, 1731 or peradventure 1730. More sources keep around indicated November 10, in any month from either 1727 to 1731. November 10, 1730 is now a virtually all unremarkably accepted birth date, based on data from the Cyclopedia Britannica.
